How does Physical Security Information Management work?
A PSIM collects information from systems used by the organization. Safety and security systems, but also ERP and HRM systems, planning software, various databases and even social media. PSIM software collects, filters and interprets the data from all of these systems and databases. As a result, operators and other stakeholders are presented with only relevant information
in a clear dashboard, also known as a Common Operational Picture. The underlying systems no longer need to be consulted. In crisis situations, the dashboard can also be shared with others, such as emergency responders. This ensures everyone has the same relevant information.
Automated Workflows
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and instructions of the organization are incorporated into a Physical Security Information Management system. These are presented as workflows (step-by-step plans) to employees and operators as soon as they are needed. They are guided through a situation step-by-step and according to established procedures, minimizing the chance of human error. Handling a situation is no longer dependent on the level or experience of an operator. With a PSIM, processes can also be translated into automated workflows, allowing these processes to be executed without employee intervention.
PSIM configuration and implementation
The success and return on investment of a PSIM are largely determined by the configuration and implementation. Processes must be mapped and deviations defined, as well as realistic threats and scenarios. The associated follow-up procedures must be worked out (in detail) to then be included in the system in the form of (dynamic) workflows. The better this is done, the more effective Physical Security Information Management will be.
