What is Fraud?<\/h3><\/h1><\/div>

Fraud entails deliberate and secretive action to obtain an illegal advantage. To minimize the risk of fraud, first and foremost you need to assess the risks and possible consequences. Any measures are always focused on limiting the opportunity and detecting the crime as soon as possible.<\/h4>\n<\/div>

Fraud Triangle<\/h3><\/h1><\/div>

Fraud can occur in relation to money, goods, time and information. The damage to the party harmed can be large and cannot always be expressed in monetary terms, for example, where damage to reputation is involved. In serious cases the very existence of the business can even be put in danger.<\/h4>\n

Research shows that there are three factors that play an important part in the emergence of fraud. These are the three elements from the Fraud Triangle:<\/h4>\n<\/div>

  1. Opportunity<\/strong>: Experience shows that it is precisely those employees in positions\/functions with a large amount of knowledge of procedures, the organisation and existing fraud supervision checks which actively look for opportunities to commit fraud.<\/li>\n
  2. Motive<\/strong>: A perpetrator has a certain motive, like poverty\/need for money, to commit fraud.<\/li>\n
  3. Rationalization<\/strong>:\u00a0The fraud thinks his crime is justifiable. For example: “I work hard enough for it”, or “The company makes plenty of profit anyway”.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In order to conceal the fraud, the perpetrator will usually follow a carefully devised and complicated plan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

    Forms of Fraud<\/h3><\/h1><\/div>

    Rudimentary, we can distinguish three forms of fraud:<\/p>\n<\/div>

    <\/div><\/div><\/div>

    <\/i><\/i><\/span>Embezzlement or theft<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

    \n
    Theft is the illegal appropriation of property, for example, by removing the property or by extortion. Embezzlement does not involve the removal of property since the person in question already has possession. Embezzlement involves an abuse of trust. This abuse of trust is the essence of fraud.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

    <\/i><\/i><\/span>Conspiracy<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

    Conspiracy exists when two or more people agree to commit the crime. If an organisation uses separation of duties as a measure to limit fraud, the advantages of this measure will be undone where there is a conspiracy. This method of committing fraud can be coupled with complicated and carefully designed plans, such as the forgery of documents, deliberately omitting transactions from the accounts or intentionally providing internal and\/or external accountants with incorrect information.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

    <\/i><\/i><\/span>Forced into fraud<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>

    Fraud based on a conspiracy, or a plot by a ‘large’ group, is much more difficult to set up than fraud committed by an individual. The theoretical probability of a conspiracy is smaller since compulsion and rationalisation would have to apply to two or more people.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Fraud Prevention<\/h3><\/h1><\/div>

    In order to minimise the risk of fraud, it is important that businesses recognise the possibility of fraud occurring and the possible damage caused. In order to do this, a good starting point is a \u201cquick scan\u201d or an R&CSA (Risk & Control Self Assessment). Both are resources which can be used to identify, measure, monitor and mitigate risks. Risks and likely consequences are made explicit from an early stage. Due to the intensive participation of managers and colleagues in the process, an R&CSA will, in particular, lead to results which will have broad support.<\/h4>\n

    The measures, bespoke or otherwise, which organisations can take to prevent fraud are always aimed at limiting opportunities and reducing the time it takes to discover fraud. In addition, every measure aimed at limiting fraud is related to one or more of the elements of the fraud triangle.<\/h4>\n<\/div>
